Blood Diamond

The model dropped out of the job because her conscience would not let her support this act of crime.

On the topic of blood diamonds and the issue of the bushman people of the Kalahari. I believe that the bushmen people are right because they are being taken away to be used by the De Beers company to mine diamonds. According to the map of the game area, they want to completely take over all of the bushmen communities in the area.

The young child in the picture will be affected depending on how far they will need to move, the further away he is from the village the more different his life will be. He would have to be used to living in an area starting from scratch, not the village he was born into.

Video number 1 summary

This video was an advertisement trying to get people to 'sponsor a child' and send in money to help in Africa. It would cost 15$ a month. The video consisted of a village in Africa which didn't seem to be doing very well. Then it starts to rain, the narrotor explains how this was the first time the little girl has seen fresh water. The shot then zooms out to show thats it not rain but a new water being install and there is water spraying out as people are tightening the bolts. The is an advertisement for a company so it would be biased anyway, but it wasn't extremely biased, it was an honest advertisement.

Give a Man a Fish Exercise

When you give aid to a country it basically means you are donating to them. It could be aid as money or aid as food or anything else that could help the people you are giving aid to. A country might give aid to another country for multiple reasons, 1 could be requested from them. Another could be an ally might need help.

Review Blood Diamonds

Blood diamonds is a movie starring Leonardo D'Caprio, and is based around the blood diamond trade. It is mostly set in Sierra Leone, however it does feature some other countries in Africa. The movie starts when a Fisherman named Soloman Vandy and his village are attacked by the RUF-a rebel group set against the Sierra Leone Government. His family escapes but Solomon is captured and forced to work in the diamond mines. He finds a very large pink diamond that could be worth a fortune. When almost caught when trying to hide it, he quickly buries it and runs away from the camp.
He then meets Danny Archer, an ex-solider and now diamond smuggler. Soon Danny convinces Solomon to help him find the diamond, so Danny can leave Africa. Along the way they meet a reporter named Maddy Bowen who is trying to help stop the trade of blood diamonds. She then becomes the love interest of Danny Archer and brings romance into the movie. Eventually many people want the diamond. Danny, Colonel Coatzee-an ex-solider who fought with Danny, and the RUF. The RUF also soon capture Soloman's son and turns him into a child solider. This then gives Soloman a new goal, to find his son. Overall it was a good movie which sheds light onto the crisis in Africa while still keeping thrill and action in the story.

Reflection:A fair world

In the topic a fair world I learned many different ways to measure and class the development of different countries, like the HDI (Human Development Index), HPI, (Happy Planet Index), MEDC (More Economically Developed Country), LEDC (Less Economically Developed Country) and NIC (Newly Industrialized Country). I learned that, for many countries, you can't classify it as a MEDC or an LEDC because they are somewhere in the middle.
I would like to be more knowlegable about HDI and HPI.
